Using Website Design Software to Design a Site

If you are considering designing your own website, you might have thought about using some website design software to help you do it.  There are many different software programs available, and making the decision as to which one to use may be quite confusing.  If you choose the wrong one, you can end up just frustrated and confused.

One of the first decisions you need to make when it comes to design software is if you want to pay for a program, or try a free one.  Of course, none of the free programs available are going to give you all the bells and whistles that you can get if you pay for a software program.  But if you are just learning, you might not want to spend money (and sometimes, quite a bit of money) on a software.  You can spend time learning some things using a free program and then make the decision to buy a more dedicated one.

The easiest software design programs are the ones called ‘WYSIWYGs’.  This stands for ‘what you see is what you get’ and this means that you can see the page you are creating as it will look when it is uploaded to the Internet.  You can switch to the html view if you want to check on what you are doing, or add an element such as an alt tag.  These are easy, but they do have their drawbacks, especially the free ones.

One of the biggest problems with a free WYSIWYG is that it doesn’t always create proper html, and even though it may look good on the page, you could have a lot of trouble with search engine rankings later on because of bad code.

Another problem is that while your page may look good on your hard drive as you are making it, it may not look the same once it is uploaded, especially on all browsers.  Since you have to have a site that looks good in all the major browsers you need to keep an eye on this.  You will do well to view your page in several different browsers just to make sure.

Buying website design software can range from economical to quite expensive, depending on just how much you want it to do.  Most of the good ones are expensive, but they write better code than the cheaper ones and they allow you to use cascading style sheets, or CSS, which is the preferred coding these days.  CSS will get you better ranking when it comes time to submit your site to the search engines.

Whatever you decide to do, just take your time and choose wisely.  You certainly do not want to spend a lot of money on software that is just going to be too hard to use and end up frustrating you.
